Perhaps in response to General Motors’ announcement that it will offer an eight-year or 100,000 mile warranty on the battery for the electric Chevrolet Volt, Nissan is testing the waters to see if it should offer a similar warranty for its electric vehicle that is due out later this year, the Leaf.

The Japanese automaker sent out a survey to the approximately 9,500 people who have paid $99 to reserve their Leaf, according to USA Today.

Nissan is reportedly asking the survey takers what the lowest level of warranty is that they would accept before deciding not to buy the Leaf. The options range from 10 years or 200,000 mile warranty to the three-year, 36,000 mile powertrain warranty that is standard on most cars sold today.

Regardless of the warranty that Nissan offers with the Leaf, drivers may want to consider the auto as it will likely get excellent gas mileage.
